Best Free AI Companion: Messages, Memory, Photos and Calls Compared

A free tier can meter four different things, and which of them you need decides the best free AI companion for you.

1. How many messages you can send. It can be unlimited, unlimited only on a smaller model, or a daily count that resets.

2. Which model answers. Some services run a smaller model for free accounts and a larger one for subscribers. Kindroid's subscription documentation says free users get messages on Lite, described as a smaller, distilled version of its flagship model, while flagship models need a trial or subscription.

3. How much the companion remembers. Memory is worth checking on its own. Character.AI's Pinned Memories feature is free for all users and lets you pin 5 messages in each chat. Kindroid's free tier includes basic long-term memory recall, but not its Cascaded Memory.

4. Whether photos, voice notes and calls cost extra. Text can be free while every image and every minute of audio is metered.

There is a fifth thing to check before you type a card number: some free trials require a payment method and renew automatically. Kindroid's 3-day premium trial for new free users requires a payment method on file and converts into a subscription if you do not cancel within the trial.

The same questions apply whether you are comparing AI companion apps or AI companion platforms that run in a browser tab.

Friendship companions and romantic companions are different products, and the free tiers are built for different things.

Replika's help center says chatting with Replika will always be free, while Replika Pro is what lets you set your relationship status to Romantic Partner and unblurs messages and photos, including romantic selfies. So on Replika, chatting is free and Romantic Partner status is paid.

Nomi markets itself to people looking for an AI friend, a romantic partner or a fantasy partner.

AI Angels is a romantic companion, and it is adults-only. There is an 18+ age gate with a date-of-birth check. Every character in the 400+ catalogue is female.

Here is what each company says about its own free tier, checked on 25 September 2026, grouped by what the free tier limits.

Unlimited free text. Character.AI's help center says messaging is free to start for all users; c.ai+ subscribers skip waiting rooms and get faster replies, and characters' output is the same on both. Pinned Memories is free and holds 5 messages per chat. Kindroid's free users get messages on Lite, its smaller model, plus 1 selfie request every 2 hours up to 2, about 5 minutes of lifetime audio and 2 Kindroids; flagship models need a trial or subscription.

Free chat, paid romance or voice. Replika's help center says chatting will always be free; voice calls, guided conversations, coping-skills content and roleplay options need a subscription. Nomi is free to start with no credit card, and free accounts include daily messages and images, though Nomi's page does not list the numbers; voice calls and messaging need a subscription.

Paid in tokens or credits. Candy AI's homepage says each subscription plan includes tokens spent across voice, chat, image and video, with top-ups available, and it offers a free account sign-up.

AI Angels charges free accounts credits for messages, photos, voice notes and calls; the next two sections give the numbers.

On raw free message volume, Character.AI and Kindroid's Lite model offer more than AI Angels' counted tiers, so if free text volume decides it for you, start with them. AI Angels' case is different: romance and credit costs for photos, voice notes and calls stated up front.

AI Angels is an 18+ AI chat companion where adults chat with AI-generated characters that remember them, and can request photos, voice notes and live voice calls.

Messages: Without an account you get up to 10 messages a day. A free account has no daily cap; each message costs 1 credit. The guest count is shared across all characters and resets at midnight UTC. Characters with the FREE badge allow messages at no credit cost (fair use applies).

Free credits: New accounts get a 50-credit sign-up bonus, and there is a daily claim of 15 credits. Fifty credits buys one photo, or two voice notes, or one minute of a call.

Language: Replies follow your language (19 languages detected). The app interface is in English.

Ask the same five questions of any free AI companion app or website before you commit. Is it built for friendship or romance? How many messages a day are free, and does the count reset or run out? Does memory need an account, and how much does it keep? Are photos, voice notes and calls metered, and at what price? Does a trial need a card, and does it renew automatically?

AI Angels is not for you if you want a platonic friend.
